Earlier this week, John Alessio was forced to withdraw from his February 1 bout with Derrick Noble at Hardcore Fighting Championships: Destiny at the Stampede Corral in Calgary, Alberta.
We were able to catch up with Alessio to get some information on the state of the injury and how it occurred. Alessio said, “The injury occurred three days before my last fight on December 12, 2007 in the WEC. I was grappling and just put my knee in a bad position and POP! I got an MRI done on it the next day, it came back that I had strained my knee but no tears.”
Alessio, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, faced Todd Moore at WEC 31: Faber vs. Curran. Alessio was able to secure a unanimous decision victory over Moore extending his current winning streak to three fights.
According to Alessio, his knee is still in pain hindering his ability to properly run and train important aspects of his game like wrestling. “My status now is that it’s just painful to train on. I can’t train like I normally do for a fight, running and wrestling and things that are important to getting ready for a fight.
What’s next for me is to get this knee fully healed, get back in the gym and look to fight at the end of March.”
John Alessio, a veteran of the UFC, TKO and WEC, possesses a mixed martial arts record of 21-10. Alessio holds victories over notable names such a Thomas Denny, Chris Brennan, Ronald Jhun, Savant Young, and Alex Serdyukov. Alessio currently trains with the likes of Randy Couture, Mike Pyle, Tyson Griffin, Jay Hieron, and Gray Maynard at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Nevada.
